Unlock Awareness and Empathy: Birdwatching Nesting Season
Awareness and Empathy: Birdwatching + Nesting Season

What You’ll Learn
Learn how to identify bird behaviors in spring, spot nests (without disturbing them), and understand how birds care for their young. In the process learn about how bird watching and nest finding instill awareness and sympathy.
Quick Background
Spring is when birds get busy! They’re building nests, laying eggs, and raising chicks—all right in your yard or neighborhood. If you listen closely and look up, you’ll notice more than chirping: you’ll see teamwork, problem-solving, and the hustle of building a home.
Try it Together
1. Find a comfy observation spot: porch, window, or yard.
2. Look and listen for:
> Birds carrying twigs or string
> Nests in trees, bushes, gutters, or tucked into ledges
> Chirping that sounds like hungry chicks
3. Set up a Bird Log to track:
> Bird species (if you know them—or describe their colors!)
> Behavior (building, sitting, feeding)
> Time of day and weather
Optional: Leave out bits of yarn, grass, or twigs in a safe spot and watch if birds collect them!
Quote
“A bird on a tree is never afraid of the branch breaking because its trust is not on the branch but on its wings. “
— Jim Kwik

Family Talks (Reflection Prompts)
1. What do you notice about how birds work together?
2. Why do you think spring is the best season for nesting?
3. What would you build your nest with if you were a bird?
Why is this relevant?
Birdwatching builds skills in patience, observation, and empathy. These are key in science—but also in life. Nature photographers, ornithologists, and even mindfulness coaches use birdwatching to train awareness and focus.
Document It!
1. Sketch the shape of a nest you find
2. Write a short story from a baby bird’s point of view
3. Record bird calls using a phone and try matching them with online guides
Bonus challenge (Optional)
Find a nest by observing a mother or father bird trying to bring twigs in a tree. When there is a nest, there is mostly like some bird eggs. When you find one, observe and record the entire process.
