Have you been thinking about how you can homeschool free in your yard? Well, science is really not very far away. Especially when you start to attach science with your yard.
Here are several free science homeschool ideas in your yard to add in your learning experiences.
When Gold and Bugs Unite
Abeka’s 5th grade science suggested to find a golden rod jungle to observe the bugs that come to visit. It is one of those amazing relationships that God has created. The golden rod – with its bright golden color – attract different kinds of bugs, and offer its nectar. In return, bugs would carry out the pollination to create more golden rod flowers. Then the cycle goes on. Neat.
So I went crazy looking for a golden rod! I was a like hawk looking at every corner of our yard and even our neighbors’s yard. And finally, after going crazy for a little bit, we found several ones.
Here are some of the videos that I have taken, and used in my class to investigate a golden rod.
Find a Caterpillar or a Chrysalis
When there is a milkweed, there is definitely a monarch butterfly. There are also other caterpillar or chrysalis that you can find. This opportunity happens from spring up to late summer.
One app that was really helpful in recognizing these butterflies and chrysalis is the Picture Insect. It is a free download and it provides a lot of learning opportunities. All you need is to picture the insect and it will give you the name. It also gives additional information about the insect. So that gives you information if insect is okay to touch or not.
